I did make one following melevsreef design but still feel the normal overflow is much better. The overflow box siphon might break if too much bubble accumulate in the box.

Agree with Leo....I even tried the version of the weir overflow using PVC pipe..but again, after a while, bubbles were collected in the tube and breaks off the siphone.
Eventually, I ended up making a new tank with a proper overflow.

{Display Tank = 24"L x 20"W x 24"H } {Sump = 20"L x 18"W x 18"H} {Skimmer = RM 6"D x 24"H Becket pwd by Rio20} {Lights = 2 x Dymax Clip On 150W MH + 2 x ATI Blueplus 24W T5HO} {Chilling = Resun 650} {Denitrator = RM Sulphur Reactor} {Flow = 3500lph return pump + 2 x Seio 620}

i DIY using overlow PVC pipe. quite good at first. can auto siphon back but recently it lost the auto siphon maybe due to internal clog up. so thinking to buy the external overflow box. lazy to shift tank again as got fishes inside.

The overflow box will also end up the same with the PVC overflow. Its not clog up but I think the siphon break.

I've been using a PVC overflow since December - initially had siphon breaks, but no more after some simple modifications. Works OK so far - had 4-5 power failures and manage to restart fine. 1st mod is to have vertical inlets, 2nd mod is to ensure the outlets at the sump is always underwater. I have a two inlets-two outlets PVC overflow that is linked together at a point, so if one pipe clog up, water can still flow even though there might be problems with water levels in the tank and sump. If both pipes clog habislah, pump will run dry...:duh: main complaint with my overflow is that sometime it gives a loud slurping sound - so have to insert & adjust air tubings in the inlets. weir would be better I believe, but the same problems you see in a PVC overflow may still occur in a weir :idontknow:
